More Delphi Roadmap Information

Here is my notes I took while listening to the Delphi Roadmap Broadcast.  Hopefully I got it all right.

It started with Michael Swindell mentioning that the farther out on a roadmap the less detailed it will be because of possible changes and less has be scoped out.

A lot of or .NET” href=”http://www.borland.com/us/products/delphi/eco.html”>ECO core functionality will be introduced into each version of the product more, with more functionality appearing with each higher SKU.   Note: With D2005 ECO was only available in the Architect version.

  • DeXter will support multiple personalities, you can start up DeXter with the personality you desire to be setup.

  • ECO State Machines & Diagrams. (2 way)
  • Full Together Support - 2 Way class diagrams (Does not require ECO) (Together calls it live source)

    • Delphi.NET, Delphi Win32 and C# support (C++ support will not be present)
    • Audit’s, Metrics, Pattern Support, and Documentation Generation
    • Code Gen for: Class Diagrams and State State Charts
    • No code gen from Active, use case, and sequence diagrams, etc..
    • If you have seen demo for Together for VS.NET then you will have seen what is going to be in Delphi

  • Nearly 4 times the number of refactorings
  • Quality and Performance are key features of this version. (Yeah!)
  • New Memory Manager to help Performance and Stability
  • John Kaster mentioned that many bug fixed for the DeXter release have already been marked as fixed in QC

  • Designer Guidelines for VCL Win32 (Both Visual and snap to positioning)
  • New Flow and Grid/Table components (Mentioned something will appear on BDN to show what this really is)
  • ECO Auto-forms for ASP.NET
  • Remote Debugging Support for all personalities.
  • Live Code Templates Replacing old snippets combined with Sync Edit (sounded cool)
  • Block Completion (BEGIN auto adds END)
  • Configurable Build System for C++ Developers (600+ Options)

In 2006 (Highlander)

  • VCL for the Compact Framework
  • New C++ Features that were missing in DeXter such as Together
  • .NET 2.0 Support
  • 64 .NET 2.0 Support
  • ECO for VCL.NET
  • No .NET 1.1 Support (as I personally would expect)

2007 - Vista Specific Features

  • Avalon
  • Indigo

2007/2008

  • Native 64 Bit Delphi/C++ Support

Plans are to keep this up to date, keep this as rolling roadmap as features

Unicode is planned to keep getting more and more support and the plan is full Unicode support, it will happen over each product release in the roadmap (Personal Note: .NET side already supports Unicode)

C++ for CLR is a research item to determine help determine requirements and priority.

There is an intention to release previews (betas) of versions products more in the future.  Possibility that they will be handed out at Devcon in Nov.
